Somaliland House of Representatives Disapproves Recent Amendment to Election Law by House of Elders

In a unanimous decision today, the Somaliland House of Representatives expressed opposition to the recent amendment made by the House of Elders to the election law. The representatives reiterated their prior approval of the law and emphasized their collective stance against the proposed changes.

Simultaneously, the house members unanimously endorsed an article promoting the combination of Presidential and Political Association elections. This decision puts the law before the President, who will now decide whether to endorse or reject it.

The amendment by the House of Elders sought to classify political associations as national parties based on their overall votes in the upcoming elections. This contrasts with the initial article, which specified that only political associations garnering 20% support in each region would qualify as national political parties.

In response to this amendment, lawmakers affirmed their intention to seek additional approval from President Muse Bihi. They expressed optimism that the election law will receive the President’s approval.
