Somaliland House of Elders Grants One-Month Extension to Committee Reviewing Amended Election Law

The Somaliland House of Elders has authorized a one-month extension for the committee tasked with reviewing the amended election law, previously passed by the House of Representatives.

The extension was prompted by the committee chairman’s assertion before the assembly that the initial three-day timeframe allotted for the legislative assessment was insufficient. The chairman advocated for a one-month extension to ensure a thorough evaluation, a request met with some opposition from legislators.

Speaker of the House, Sulieman Mohamud Adam, officially announced the extension period and emphasized that the committee must conclude its assessments within the stipulated 30 days. Any failure to adhere to this timeframe will not warrant further extensions. The Speaker emphasized.

Formed on Sunday, the committee is charged with conducting a comprehensive evaluation, identifying areas requiring correction, and considering potential additions to the legislation.

The amended election law proposes the integration of presidential and political parties’ elections scheduled for November 2024, a proposition that has gained endorsement from a majority of political stakeholders.
