Political Associations in Somaliland Divided Over Mediation Committee’s Election Proposal

The recently established political associations within Somaliland have displayed varying stances in response to the election proposal put forth by the mediation committee. This proposal suggests the combination of the Presidential and political association elections.

Mohamud Hashi, Chairperson of the Kaah political association, conveyed their acceptance of the mediation committee’s election proposal. Despite critiquing it and asserting that it did not fully align with the interests of the political associations, they chose to support it in the interest of the nation. Hashi emphasized that compromise, one of the fundamental principles of his political association, stands as a crucial hallmark of effective leadership.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Ismael Samatar, Chairperson of the Hillaac Political Association, disclosed that his association opted not to endorse the newly proposed election arrangement advocated by the mediation committee. He cited concerns that it could potentially jeopardize good governance within Somaliland and potentially violate the country’s constitution.

Ahmed Ismael Samatar advocated against imposing this proposal on the populace, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive consultation sessions aimed at arriving at a sustainable resolution to the ongoing political discord.

Previously, The President, opposition parties and other political associations have fully expressed their support towards the mediation committee’s election proposal.
