UN urges Sudan to resolve political impasse

The political gladiators in Sudan have been charged by the United Nations to work in unison to resolve the current political impasse on the country. Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021 after the military sacked Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government.

The United Nations has raised concerns over the tense political situation in Sudan due to a delay in the signing of a final agreement to resolve the country’s months-long political crisis.

In a statement, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called on Sudan’s rivals to work on issues obstructing the transition to a civilian regime in the country as and how expected.

The UN rights chief called on all parties “to set aside entrenched positions and personal interests, to focus on the common interests of the Sudanese people by redoubling efforts towards restoration of a civilian-led government.”

Türk also called on “all sides to work together to overcome obstacles on security sector reform and avoid any further delays in the signing of the political agreement.”

He urged all Sudanese sides to de-escalate tensions and refrain from violence.

Sudan’s transitional period which started in August 2019 was scheduled to end with elections in early 2024 but the process has marred by delays.

No date has been announced for the signing of the deal after the final, earlier scheduled for April 6, was postponed.
