Sudan: Protesters rally against high commodity prices as police crackdown continues.

Protests continue to rock Sudan as security forces fired tear gas at people protesting against sharp rises in the cost of bread, fuel and other essential commodities.

Marches have been held across the country. Protesters  said live bullets were used against them in the south-eastern city of Damazin.

Regular protests calling for the civilian rule have taken place since a military coup led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in October with heavy-handed crackdowns leaving 87 dead, according to medics.

On Sunday, the price of bread increased by more than 40%. The cost of fuel is also soaring.

The United Nations says a third of the population of one of the world’s poorest countries  is already reliant on aid.

The situation has deteriorated since last year’s coup which led to the suspension of crucial donor funds.

Sudan emerged in 2020 from decades of U.S. sanctions and its 45 million inhabitants  have to deal with inflation exceeding 300% every month and non-existent infrastructure
