Somaliland House of Representatives Delays Recess Due to Pending Approval of Key law amendments

The Somaliland House of Representatives has taken the decision to defer its scheduled recess, originally set to commence tomorrow, by a period of two weeks. This postponement has been deemed necessary to ensure the completion of crucial amendments to the election law, specifically aimed at enabling the combination of presidential and political party elections.

During today’s legislative session, Speaker Yasin Faratoon called upon fellow house members to grant their consent for an extension of their parliamentary duties by an additional two weeks. This proposal put forth by the Speaker was unanimously endorsed by the house.

In providing rationale for the extension of parliamentary proceedings, Speaker Faratoon underscored the significance of several pending laws that hold substantial public interest. He emphasized the importance of their expeditious approval prior to the house members embarking on their recess.

However, President Bihi had previously presented to the parliament a newly proposed electoral framework, as recommended by the mediation committee. This framework advocates for the integration of both presidential and political party elections in the forthcoming year.
