The Somaliland Civil Aviation Authority has responded to recent allegations made by the Somalia government regarding purported disruptions to flight routes. Somalia authorities accused Somaliland of interfering with air traffic and issued warnings of potential consequences if such actions persist.
In a press release today, the Somaliland Civil Aviation Authority refuted these claims and asserted its jurisdiction over its airspace, which it asserts was reinstated on February 12. The authority cited instances of preventing airspace violations allegedly committed by the Federal Government of Somalia and accused Somalia of politicizing civilian passenger flights, and breached civil aviation agreements between the two sides.
Despite Somalia’s assertion of foreign involvement in Somaliland’s airspace control, Somaliland maintains that it has effectively managed all flights to its territory within the specified timeframe.
Tensions between Somaliland and Somalia have escalated following Somaliland’s reported memorandum of understanding with Ethiopia, which Somalia vehemently opposes due to its implications for recognition of Somaliland by the Ethiopian government.
