Somalia’s President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, addressed concerns regarding Ethiopia’s proposed naval base in Somaliland, asserting his country’s determination to defend its interests.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized Somalia’s readiness to take necessary measures to safeguard its territory in light of the potential recognition of Somaliland as an independent state by Ethiopia. While refraining from specifying potential military actions, the President reiterated Somalia’s commitment to securing its sovereignty.
The recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Somaliland and Ethiopia, which involves leasing coastline for a naval base, has sparked diplomatic tensions, with Somalia opposing the move on international platforms.
Despite assertions from both parties that the agreement respects the sovereignty of other nations, Somaliland claims an independent state from Somalia, citing the failed union between the two states in 1960.
