Somalia government vows to protect journalists and media freedom
The federal government of Somalia expressed its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of journalists, and ensuring that the media operates well in the country. The minister of information, Daud Aweis said that the government is ready to address the issues that affect the media sector, such as legal reforms, capacity building, and access to information.
He also stressed that the media has a vital role in society, and therefore it needs to adhere to the principles and ethics of journalism. He said that the government will not tolerate any media outlet that works in a dishonest or biased way, or that incites violence or hatred.
The minister urged journalists to improve their professional skills and knowledge, and promised that the FGS will support the independent and pluralistic media to work well in the country. He said that the FGS values the contribution of the media to the development and stability of Somalia.
He made these remarks during a meeting he held with journalists and media representatives in Mogadishu on Saturday, where he discussed the security of journalists and the challenges they face in their work.
The minister said that he will hold regular consultations with the media stakeholders, and that he will establish a mechanism to address the complaints and concerns of journalists.
