A recently released report highlights a noteworthy shift in travel trends within Somaliland, indicating a substantial increase in outbound travelers over the past five years. Conversely, inbound visitors to the Horn of Africa state have experienced a marked decline.

Statistics for the first half of 2018 reported approximately 63,972 visitors to Hargeisa, whereas the corresponding period in 2023 recorded a reduced figure of 47,314 visitors, signifying a decline of around 20,000 visitors during this time span.

The Ministry of Finance’s report attributes the rise in outbound travel to an increase of 10,000 individuals leaving Hargeisa, a phenomenon largely believed to be influenced by political turmoil and security concerns witnessed in the region in recent years.

The dynamics of travel, both inbound and outbound, hold significant implications for Somaliland’s economic landscape, as Hargeisa continues to attract Somali and non-Somali travelers. It is important to note that the report does not account for immigrants and migrants who crossed borders through neighboring territories.
