Prime Minister Barre Announces Initiative to Remove Roadblocks in Mogadishu in 2024
Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamse Abdi Barre, has declared the government’s commitment to clearing all roadblocks in Mogadishu at the onset of the upcoming year in 2024. This announcement was made during a convened meeting by the Banadir regional administration, aimed at commemorating advancements in security within the capital city.
Prime Minister Barre underscored the pivotal role of ensuring full security in the capital for the government to make substantial progress. He urged various sectors of the Mogadishu community to actively contribute to the eradication of al-Shabaab from both Mogadishu and the entire nation.
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts, Prime Minister Barre commended the security agencies and the Banadir region’s administration. He emphasized the critical juncture at which the country currently stands, with global evaluation imminent due to the lifting of the arms embargo and the successful attainment of debt relief.
In previous years, security measures involved the use of substantial obstacles to prevent potential car bomb threats. However, this approach resulted in congestion on the remaining streets, prompting frustrated soldiers to resort to live ammunition to clear blocked thoroughfares, leading to unfortunate casualties.
