Burao, Togdheer — In a historic event symbolizing Somaliland’s pride and heritage, President H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Ciro) today officially laid the foundation stone for the restoration and redevelopment of the iconic Sheikh Bashir Monument.
The ceremony drew a large gathering of government officials, religious scholars, community leaders, and citizens, all united in celebrating the enduring legacy of Sheikh Bashir, one of Somaliland’s most revered figures. A religious leader and nationalist hero, Sheikh Bashir played a pivotal role in the 20th-century anti-colonial struggle against British rule, leaving a legacy of faith, courage, and leadership.
During his keynote address, President Ciro highlighted the importance of the monument as a symbol of Somaliland’s historical identity and national unity. He described Sheikh Bashir as both a scholar and a freedom fighter whose example continues to inspire Somalilanders today. “Reviving Sheikh Bashir’s legacy is not just about honoring history,” the President said. “It is about instilling patriotism, responsibility, and pride in every generation of Somalilanders.”
