Gabon’s Opposition tasks coup leaders to revisit ballot counting
In the wake of the recent coup in Gabon, the country’s main opposition party finds a glimmer of hope and extends gratitude to the military for opposing what they call “an electoral coup.”
The opposition party has urged the military to carry out a thorough counting of ballots from the recent general elections, asserting that these results will demonstrate the victory of opposition leader Ondo Ossa.
The coup unfolded shortly after the announcement of President Ali Bongo’s victory in the presidential poll, with the military alleging electoral fraud. The initial results indicated Ossa securing 30.77 percent of the vote against Bongo’s 64.27 percent.
Following the coup, the military invalidated the election results and disbanded all government institutions.
On Thursday, the junta declared that General Brice Oligui Nguema would be inaugurated as the “President of the Transition,” without specifying the duration of this transitional period.
Ossa’s Alternance 2023 platform has extended an invitation to the military for a dialogue within a “patriotic and responsible framework.”
They express optimism that through collaborative efforts, they can find the best solution for the country’s future, aiming to emerge from this tumultuous period with renewed strength.
