Former AU President charges Africa to strive against Neocolonization

President Azali Assoumani of Comoros and former Chair of the African Union emphasized the imperative for Africans to initiate a new phase of struggle against the lingering forces of neocolonization on the continent. President Assoumani’s remarks came during Ethiopia’s celebration of the 128th anniversary of the historic Victory of Adwa.

Reflecting on the significance of the Victory of Adwa, President Assoumani underscored how African nations drew inspiration from Ethiopia’s triumph over Italian colonial ambitions to embrace the ideals of pan-Africanism.
He emphasized the need for unity and a collective effort to build a stronger Africa, free from external influences.
Highlighting Ethiopia’s unique position as an ancient and uncolonized country, President Assoumani urged Africans to view Ethiopia as an exemplar in their ongoing struggle for independence and sovereignty.
He acknowledged Ethiopia’s historical role as a staunch defender of peace and freedom on the African continent.
While commemorating the Battle of Adwa as a pivotal moment in African history, President Assoumani acknowledged the evolving nature of colonialism, manifesting itself in economic pressures, political tensions, cultural invasions, and the manipulation of international financial institutions to achieve external goals.
The president lamented the enduring impact of colonialism on African societies, which continues to hinder social and economic development.
President Assoumani highlighted the African Union’s commitment to addressing historical injustices, pointing to initiatives such as the call for reparations. He stressed the importance of financial reparations, coupled with educational initiatives and a commitment to equality, as a means to uplift communities that have suffered the irreversible damage of slavery.
With a decade-long implementation of Agenda 2063, President Assoumani expressed the African Union’s dedication to inclusive and sustainable development, considering it a tangible expression of the pan-African drive for unity, self-determination, freedom, progress, and collective prosperity.
