Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has initiated a major reshuffle of the Ethiopian cabinet, aimed at reinforcing the nation’s leadership. The House of People’s Representatives (HOPR) officially approved the Prime Minister’s nominations for crucial positions during its 15th regular session.
In this reshuffle, Temesgen Tiruneh assumes the role of Deputy Prime Minister, while Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie is appointed as the new Foreign Minister. Additionally, Dr. Mekdes Daba takes on the position of Health Minister.
During the15th regular session of House of Peoples’ Representatives today, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed presented the nominees’ credentials, securing unanimous approval from the House for each appointment.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed its congratulations to Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie, acknowledging his appointment as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Gratitude was also expressed to the outgoing Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, H.E. Demeke Mekonnen, for his dedicated service to the nation.
H.E. Ambassador Taye Atske Selassie, with over three decades of diplomatic experience, previously served as the Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister.
In the same session, Dr. Mekdes Daba’s appointment as the new Health Minister was unanimously endorsed.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted her qualifications, and the House recognized Dr. Mekdes Daba for her exceptional contributions, as evidenced by her receipt of the 2021 FIGO (World Congress of Gynecology & Obstetrics) award.
This major cabinet reshuffle signals a strategic move to split roles in Ethiopia’s governance and address critical national priorities as it we recall the H.E. Demeke Mekonnen was holding the two powerful positions in the past.
