Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister Engages in Diplomacy at World Economic Forum
Mr. Demeke Mekonnen, Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, is actively participating in the 54th edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. The annual meeting, themed “Rebuilding Trust,” aims to address critical global issues, including development, security, innovation, and climate change.
During the WEF 2024, Mr. Demeke held sideline meetings with key figures, including the Vice President of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango, and the Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang.
In discussions with Vice President Mpango, Mr. Demeke provided a comprehensive briefing on the ongoing construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
The talks emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure the fair and equitable use of the Nile water resource. Both parties expressed commitment to organizing a joint ministerial meeting between the two countries at the earliest opportunity.
In a separate meeting with WIPO Director-General Daren Tang, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister underscored Ethiopia’s eagerness to enhance cooperation with WIPO.
Tang assured continued support from WIPO and accepted Mr. Demeke’s invitation to visit Ethiopia, further solidifying the commitment to strengthening ties and collaboration between Ethiopia and the international organization.
