The Ethiopian Federal Police Commission and the South Sudan National Police Service have reached an agreement to collaborate on combating terrorism and illicit arms trafficking in their border areas.
Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner General Demelash Gebremichael hosted a delegation from South Sudan led by Inspector General of the South Sudan National Police Service, Atem Marol. During their meeting, Commissioner General Demelash highlighted the ongoing support provided to the South Sudanese police under the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
He emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to sharing the valuable experiences gained through recent police reforms.
The discussions focused on enhancing the implementation of the MoU to strengthen collaboration between the two police forces as sides agreed on the necessity of joint efforts to prevent terrorism and illegal arms trafficking, particularly in the border regions of their countries.
To facilitate this cooperation, a technical team has been established, and directives have been put in place to ensure that senior police officers from both nations will soon meet in the Gambela region for further discussions.
Inspector General Atem Marol expressed his gratitude for the educational opportunities provided by the Ethiopian Police University to young South Sudanese police officers. He stressed the importance of continuing and expanding this collaboration.
The South Sudanese delegation also toured the Ethiopian Federal Police’s EFP Citizen Engagement App, recently launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
