Ethiopia, Egypt and agree to Continue GERD Talks in Addis Ababa

Ethiopia Egypt and Sudan have reached an agreement to hold the next round of technical talks in Addis Ababa, as confirmed by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. The latest round of negotiations surrounding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) concluded on Tuesday in Cairo, marking an important step forward in the ongoing discussions.

The talks, hosted by the Egyptian government, have been focused on expediting the finalization of an agreement outlining the rules governing the filling and operation of the GERD. With the three nations at the negotiation table, the goal is to ensure a mutually beneficial outcome for all parties involved.

Ambassador Seleshi Bekele, a key member of the Ethiopian technical team, took to his social media accounts to announce the forthcoming talks, scheduled for December.

He reiterated Ethiopia’s unwavering commitment to achieving a win-win solution, grounded in the principle of equitable and reasonable utilization of the Nile River.

This marks the third round of talks regarding the GERD, with the first two rounds taking place in Cairo in August and Addis Ababa in September.

Despite the multiple discussions, the Egyptian government maintains that there has been no discernible shift in Ethiopia’s stance on the matter.

Egypt, with a paramount concern for its water security and the interests of both Sudan and Ethiopia, seeks a legally binding agreement that governs the dam’s filling and operation.
