Ethiopia clinches grant to propel Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiative

In a stride towards environmental sustainability, Ethiopia has successfully secured funding from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to advance its initiative in producing low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel.

The financial support is poised to facilitate Ethiopia’s transition from conventional fossil-based jet fuel to an eco-friendly alternative, aligning with its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon dioxide emissions from aviation by 2050.

The sustainable aviation fuel, derived from waste and harnessed through herbal resources with minimal carbon emissions, underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to environmentally conscious practices in the aviation sector.

As one of the 184 member states committed to ICAO’s long-term aspirational goal, Ethiopia has positioned itself at the forefront of sustainable aviation practices.

The nation’s participation in the 3rd Conference on Aviation Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) in Dubai from November 20 to 24 played a pivotal role in securing the funding.

The financial support materialized following bilateral discussions between Ethiopian officials and the French Government on the sidelines of the conference.

The announcement of the funding by ICAO took place in Dubai, UAE, with the presence of key Ethiopian representatives.

State Minister for Transport and Logistics, Denge Boru, and Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority, Getachew Mengistie, were actively involved in the unveiling of this crucial support.

This funding not only propels Ethiopia’s sustainable aviation fuel initiative but also reinforces the nation’s dedication to playing a leading role in the global pursuit of carbon-neutral aviation by 2050.
