Double Standard: US Ambassador Warns Against Algeria’s Gaza Ceasefire Resolution.

The Algeria’sdraft resolution to the United Nations Security Council which calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, has generated diverse opinions within the international community. The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, expressed concerns that the proposed resolution could jeopardize sensitive negotiations aimed at brokering a pause in Israel’s war.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the potential consequences of the draft resolution, stating that it could thwart the efforts to secure the release of hostages and establish an extended pause crucial for Palestinian civilians and aid workers.

She cautioned that the resolution’s acceptance could pose a threat to the delicate negotiations and urged careful consideration of its implications.

However, Ms. Thomas-Greenfield while highlighting the potential positive outcomes of the resolution said If the proposal was accepted and implemented, it would move all parties one step closer to creating the conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities.

For the UN Security Council resolution, to be adopted, requires at least nine votes in favor and must avoid vetoes from the United States, Britain, France, China, or Russia.

The fate of the draft resolution and its potential impact on the situation in Gaza remain uncertain, raising questions about the balance between humanitarian concerns and the complexities of diplomatic negotiations.
