Covid-19: 20 million people in UK receive first dose of vaccine

In its efforts to bring the pandemic to the barest minimum, more than 20 million people across the United Kingdom have now received their first COVID-19 vaccine shot. The figure indicated that the country has made more progress, having emerged as Europe’s fastest vaccination programme.

In a video uploaded to his Twitter profile, the health secretary, Matt Hancock, said it was a “magnificent achievement for the country.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the milestone represented a huge national achievement and he paid testament to the country’s health, workers, volunteers and armed forces.

Britain has suffered the highest COVID-19 death toll in Europe. It currently stands at 122,849 and the heaviest economic shock among big rich countries.

The pace of the vaccination roll-out has, however, raised the prospect of a gradual lifting of its current lockdown restrictions between now and the end of June.

With the new vaccination achievement by the UK, the country is stepping up its campaign with 2 million people between the age of 60 to 63 in England being invited to book a Covid-19 jab, with their letters due to start arriving on Monday.

NHS England said the letters would explain how people could make an appointment through the national booking service
