No fewer than ten people were killed and at least 160 other villagers kidnapped in an attack on a remote community in Nigeria’s central Niger state.
Reports say a large number of armed men, suspected to be from Nigeria’s extremist group Boko Haram, raided Kuchi village in an armed attack.
Local official Aminu Abdulhamid Najume confirmed that many of the kidnapped victims were mostly women and children, while those killed included local hunters who were providing security for the area.
He added that the community was devastated by the attack, which has left families and friends in a state of sadness.
The attackers faced no retaliation from the Nigerian security agencies, as they reportedly arrived on motorbikes and even spent time preparing food, making tea, and plundering houses before leaving over two hours later.
While reacting to the incident, Amnesty International said it was deeply concerned by the mass abduction, stressing that the invasion of the village by the gunmen is yet another indication of the Nigerian authorities’ utter failure to protect lives.”
“Since 2021 gunmen have been consistently attacking Kuchi village and raping women and girls in their matrimonial homes.
The rights body then called on the Nigerian authorities to end the spate of abductions and bring suspected perpetrators to justice.
