A consortium led by 8.2 Renewable Energy Experts Hamburg, in partnership with other entities, has successfully concluded the feasibility assessment for a floating photovoltaic (PV) system on four reservoirs associated with various hydropower plants in Uganda. The project, funded by Sweden’s Development Finance Institution, Swedfund, aims to advance solar energy utilization in Uganda.
The assessment, conducted between the cities of Jinja and Karuma along the Nile River, evaluated the suitability of different sites based on comprehensive criteria. Sweco International AB leads the consortium overseeing the consultancy work, with 8.2 Renewable Energy Experts Hamburg actively involved in guiding the project from planning to the tendering stage.
Ralf Reek, the Managing Director of 8.2 Renewable Energy Experts Hamburg, expressed pride in contributing to Uganda’s renewable energy promotion and emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting this pilot initiative.
The project, initiated in 2021, focuses on leveraging Uganda’s abundant water resources for energy development. In a bid to enhance solar energy infrastructure, the Ministry of Water and Environment in Uganda launched an auction in December 2023, inviting developers to establish 40 solar energy water supply projects across the country. The consultancy services tender for the project commenced in January, demonstrating Uganda’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio.
With 94 MW of installed photovoltaic capacity recorded at the close of 2022, Uganda is actively working towards enhancing its renewable energy capabilities, addressing both environmental and economic development needs.
