Somaliland Firmly Asserts Independence in Face of Egypt’s Disapproval of Somaliland-Ethiopia MOU

Following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia on January 1st of this year, heightened regional tensions prompted Egypt to openly oppose the agreement during discussions between leaders of Somalia and Egypt—an action that drew criticism from Somaliland.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Somaliland reiterated its steadfast resistance to external interference and urged Egypt to channel its diplomatic endeavors towards resolving ongoing conflicts with neighboring nations such as Sudan, Libya, and Gaza.

Highlighting the significant challenges faced by Egypt’s immediate neighbors, Somaliland expressed the belief that Egypt’s constructive engagement in these regional issues could significantly contribute to lasting peace and security.

While emphasizing its sovereign right to engage in international agreements with partner nations, Somaliland welcomed collaboration with any entity seeking agreements and committed to continued diplomatic dialogue to foster peace and development in the Horn of Africa.

The MOU between Somaliland and Ethiopia, reportedly grants the Ethiopians an access to sea in Somaliland while Ethiopia becoming the first country to officially recognise Somaliland as sovereign country.
