RSF Camp in South Darfur Seized Amid Escalating Regional Tensions

Forces aligned with the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), led by Abdel Wahid Nur, have taken control of a substantial Rapid Support Forces (RSF) camp in South Darfur. This development follows the RSF’s abrupt withdrawal towards the state capital, Nyala,

According to military sources on Sunday, the SLM forces seized the RSF camp located in the Deribat area of South Darfur and retreated to Nyala, prompting their takeover of the camp.

The RSF had established a significant presence in Deribat, a location that had previously served as one of the strongholds for the holdout movement before being compelled to withdraw towards Jebel Marra.

The recapture of the RSF camp by the SLM is part of their ongoing strategy to expand influence across South, Central, and North Darfur states, taking advantage of the security vacuum created by the continuing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which erupted on April 15, 2022.

It would be recalled that in late last month, The SLM deployed a substantial force led by the movement’s army chief of staff to El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, to protect displacement camps against potential RSF attacks on Darfur’s historic capital.

The RSF’s successful capture of four out of five Darfur states has prompted various factions to reassess their neutral stance in the conflict between the army and the paramilitary group.

Concerns are growing that this shift could establish a new regional paradigm, contributing to escalating tensions in the area.
