U.S announces $2m logistical, medivac support for Somalia forces

The United States government has officially declared its commitment to provide $2 million in support to enhance the ongoing efforts against the Al-Shabaab in central and southern regions of Somalia. The second phase of these critical operations is anticipated to commence in the forthcoming days as the federal government revealed.

A statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu details that this financial assistance will be funneled through the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) with the primary purpose of facilitating the transportation and in-theater medical evacuation capabilities for the Somalia Security Forces, in alignment with the UNSOS mandate.

UNSOS, as mandated by the United Nations Security Council, plays a role in offering essential logistical support to the Somalia Security Forces and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia as they engage in joint efforts to combat the Al-Shabaab insurgency.

The Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu, Shane Dixon, has expressed confidence that this financial injection will significantly contribute to the Somalia Security Forces’ ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab.

UNSOS, in its current capacity, is tasked with supporting the specific logistical needs of 15,900 Somalia Security Forces, further solidifying the commitment of international partners in the pursuit of regional stability
