Officials from Ethiopia and Pakistan are deliberating on expanding their collaborative efforts in the health sector, with a particular focus on academic and research cooperation. The visits underscored the mutual interest of both countries in leveraging each other’s strengths to enhance healthcare services, medical education, and research capabilities.

A six-member Ethiopian delegation, led by H.E. Dr. Abdulahi Hussein, Vice President of Jigjiga University of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE), alongside H.E. Jemal Beker Abdula, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of FDRE in Islamabad, engaged in discussions with senior representatives of Pakistan’s Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, as well as various associated parastatals and public sector universities.
During their visit to the Ministry of National Health Services, the Ethiopian delegation held talks with Director General Health, Dr. Baseer Achakzai, aimed at fostering cooperation between the two countries in the healthcare domain.
Ambassador Jemal Beker emphasized the importance of establishing institutional connections in healthcare, while also providing insights into the healthcare and medical training systems in the FDRE.
Both sides expressed their commitment to formalize their cooperation through the creation of memoranda of understanding.
The delegation’s agenda also included a visit to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where comprehensive discussions centered around potential collaborative opportunities in the medical sector.
Further engagements included a meeting with the Executive Director of PIMS, during which the Ethiopian delegates received an overview of the institute’s operations and functions.
Moreover, the Ethiopian health experts visited several key institutions in Pakistan’s healthcare landscape, including the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, Pakistan Medical and Dental Council, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, and Al-Maroof Hospital Islamabad.
The potential agreements outlined in the memoranda of understanding are expected to lay the foundation for a more robust and mutually beneficial partnership in the health sector between Ethiopia and Pakistan.
