The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, reiterated his call for the Ethiopian government to maintain positive neighborly relations with Somalia in light of the recent agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia, signed earlier this year.
President Hassan Sheikh conveyed this message during an event where medals were awarded to the winners of Somalia’s regional football tournament. He emphasized that diplomatic respect from Somalia towards Ethiopia hinges upon Ethiopia’s commitment to respecting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Commenting on the Somaliland-Ethiopia Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), President Hassan Sheikh characterized it as an untenable endeavor, alleging Ethiopia’s purported interest in facilitating Somaliland’s secession from Somalia to gain access to the sea.
However, Somaliland asserts its status as an independent country from Somalia and has reiterated its prerogative to engage in agreements with both international and regional partners.
