A court in Pakistan has sentenced former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to jail for seven years on one of two corruption charges. The anti-corruption court sentenced Sharif on graft charges, and acquitted him in a second case
Sharif, who was removed from power last year over corruption allegations, has denied any wrongdoing. The court found the prime minister was unable to prove the source of income for the ownership of a steel mill in Saudi Arabia,.
In July Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in prison over the purchase of luxury apartments in London but was released on bail in September after appealing the sentence
Security was tightened around the court in Islamabad before the verdict and a thousand police officers were on standby. His supporters claim the conviction is a politically motivated collusion between the judiciary and Pakistan’s powerful security establishment. Sharif denies the charges and members of his party say they will protest the decision.
