Sudanese Crisis Deepens: UN Agencies Warn of Worsening Situation

The United Nations (UN) has warned that the humanitarian crisis stemming from the conflict in Sudan, is on the brink of worsening in the coming months. UN agencies, the UN Development Programme and the International Food Policy Research Institute, issued the warning on Friday in a jointly released report.

The UN agencies cautioned that unless the ongoing fighting, nearing its one-year anniversary since eruption ceases, the crisis could intensify and extend into neighboring African countries.

The report predicts a famine in Sudan by 2024, particularly affecting regions such as Khartoum, Al-Jazira, Darfur, and Kordofan.

It stated that the health system in Sudan is collapsing due to acute shortages of essential medical supplies, staff, and facilities caused by the conflict.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman, Christian Lindmeier, their is a need for cessation of hostilities and smooth access for humanitarian aid delivery as tme is running out.

Lindmeier warns that without intervention, Sudan’s crisis could spiral further, leading to an influx of refugees, increased disease transmission, and heightened food insecurity, impacting the entire region.

Fighting in Sudan erupted on April 15 last year between the Sudanese Army SAF and the Rapid Support Forces RSF, and has claimed thousands of lives and triggered a mass displacement of over 8.5 million people, with nearly 1.8 million seeking refuge across Sudan’s borders.
