Somaliland MP Ahmed Guruuje Urges Electoral Commission to Prevent Election Delays

In a press conference, Somaliland Member of Parliament Ahmed Nour Guruuje called on the national electoral commission to refrain from any actions that could delay the upcoming election.

He cited circulating rumors regarding the commission’s potential plan to implement a biometric voting system. This proposed change has received support from the ruling party but faces opposition from other political factions.

Although neither the national electoral commission nor the political parties have publicly confirmed these reports, Guruuje urged the commission to avoid decisions that might lead to further postponements of the election.

He highlighted the recent political instability in Somaliland, which resulted in loss of life and the arrest of opposition supporters, ultimately resolved through the intervention of traditional elders.

Guruuje stressed the importance of adhering to the recommendations made by these traditional elders, which were subsequently approved by the parliament. He emphasized that the elections should proceed as scheduled on November 13 to prevent additional political unrest.
