No fewer than seven Muslim worshippers were killed when armed men invaded a mosque at Saya-Saya Village in the Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State, northern Nigeria.
Police authorities in the state confirmed the incident and the casualty figure on Saturday.
Reports say the ugly incident happened when Muslim worshippers were observing the Isha’i (sunset) prayers at a local mosque in the area.
The worshippers, including a vigilante leader, were gunned down by the unidentified terrorists while the prayer was on going.
Two others injured during the attack were taken to hospital for treatment.
The state police said security has been beefed up in the area and surrounding communities by a combined force of policemen and soldiers, while moves are ongoing to arrest the attackers.
In the last three years, gangs of highly armed men have wrecked havoc in Nigeria’s northwest, kidnapping thousands, killing hundreds, and making it unsafe to travel by road or farm in some places.
The attacks have added to the worries of security agencies that have been fighting a 14-year insurgency in the northeast, deadly farmer-herder and sectarian battles in the north-central and escalating attacks by a separatist group in the southeastern parts of the country.
