Mexican Authorities Identify Migrants with Ties to Terrorism from Somalia

Mexico city – CBA TV – Mexican Authorities Identify Migrants with Ties to Terrorism from Somalia
Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) revealed between 2014 and 2018, the agency detected 19 migrants with alleged ties to a terrorist group. In the same four-year period, another 490 migrants had criminal records, and 41 had ties to organized crime, for a total of 550 migrants with some form of association with crime or terrorism.

According to the Federal Audit Office (ASF), in 2018 alone, the 164 cases reported to the agency consisted of five suspected terrorists, another 15 migrants were discovered to have a connection to organized crime, and 144 had prior criminal history.

The countries of origin of these criminal migrants included Somalia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Yemen, and Central America – primarily from Guatemala.

In all cases, controlled deportation from abroad was carried out and the respective immigration alert was generated to the corresponding authority.
Undaunted by a dangerous journey over thousands of miles, people fleeing economic hardship and human rights abuses in African countries are going to the U.S.-Mexico border in unprecedented numbers, surprising Border Patrol agents more accustomed to Spanish-speaking migrants.

The explosion in immigration to the United States from sub-Saharan Africa coincides with a steep drop in the migration flow across the Mediterranean to Europe after European countries and two main embarkation points — Turkey and Libya — decided to crack down.

From Jan. 1 to June 12, only 24,600 migrants arrived in Europe by sea, compared to 99,600 over the same period in 2017, according to the International Organization for Migration.
