Kenyan President William Ruto has revealed that Kenya is set to become a visa-free country, marking the end of visa requirements for all visitors starting January 2024. This significant development eliminates the need for individuals from any part of the world to apply for a visa to enter Kenya.
The announcement, made during the 60th Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, follows a recent declaration by the president to open Kenya’s borders for visa-free travel by Africans at the end of December 2023.
President Ruto emphasized that the government will abolish visa requirements for all visitors, underlining the nation’s commitment to facilitating seamless travel.
To implement this progressive policy, the government has established a digital platform ensuring the advanced identification of all travelers. Consequently, visitors will only need to obtain electronic travel authorization before exploring the country renowned for its tourist attractions.
President Ruto expressed his delight, stating, “Beginning January 2024, Kenya will be a visa-free country.” He highlighted that individuals worldwide will no longer bear the burden of applying for a visa, extending a warm welcome to humanity and echoing the sentiment of the Turkana people: “Tobong’u Lorre!”—Welcome Home!
This move aligns with global trends as countries simplify entry processes and lift restrictions on international travel. Kenya’s decision reflects its commitment to globalization and socio-economic development, with President Ruto affirming that Kenyans embrace the world beyond their borders fearlessly.
During the Youth Connekt Africa Summit on December 9, President Ruto advocated for Africa to abolish visa requirements, citing the success of borderless countries in Europe. He reiterated Kenya’s support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), emphasizing that eliminating visa restrictions enhances economic integration across the continent.
