IGAD Heads of State calls for de-escalation of tensions and constructive dialogue between Ethiopia and Somalia

In a gathering of the 42nd Extraordinary Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) unfolded in Entebbe, Uganda, the assembly, Under the leadership of H.E. Ismail Omar Guelleh, zeroed in on critical matters, delving into the ongoing situation in Sudan and addressing recent developments shaping the relations between Ethiopia and Somalia in the Horn of Africa.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda on January 18, 2024, received commendation for successfully hosting the assembly, where leaders expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended to delegates.
Deep concern was expressed regarding recent developments in the relations between Ethiopia and Somalia.
The assembly reaffirmed the principles of respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Somalia, calling for de-escalation of tensions and constructive dialogue between the two nations.
The assembly also addressed the ongoing conflict in Sudan, emphasizing the need for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
IGAD expressed readiness to facilitate an all-inclusive peace process, collaborating with Sudanese stakeholders, the African Union (AU), and international partners.
Key decisions include parties involved in the Sudanese conflict committed to a face-to-face meeting within 14 days, with a call for adherence to this timeline amongst several others.
