The Government of Somaliland has opted to grant amnesty to the armed militia who staged a protest in Ga’an Libah Mountains in response to the election sequence in the country.
In an official statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, it was highlighted that this decision follows the endorsement by President Bihi of the mediation committee’s recommendations regarding both the upcoming elections and the armed militia.
In the previous month, a confrontation between Somaliland police and the armed militia resulted in the loss of nine soldiers and the injury of seventeen others as reported by the Police Chief. The government had accused the militia of posing a threat to national security.
However, the recent mediation proposal appears to be fostering unity among previously opposing factions, with the aim of resolving the longstanding disputes surrounding the election sequence.
