Ethiopia will be officially joining the BRICS the coming Monday. The quest to become a member of the BRICS alliance has been met with resounding approval at the group’s 15th Summit held in Johannesburg on 24 August 2023. The leadership of BRICS warmly welcomed Ethiopia into its fold during the summit, marking a significant milestone for the East African nation.
According to the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA), Ethiopia is set to formally join BRICS in the upcoming week. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) expressed his satisfaction, hailing the moment as crucial for Ethiopia.
He stated, “An important moment for Ethiopia, the BRICS leaders accepted our entry into the group today. Ethiopia stands ready to cooperate with all for an inclusive and prosperous world order.”
The move not only elevates Ethiopia’s global standing but also expands the BRICS membership by welcoming four additional nations—Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Iran.
As of the imminent Monday, the alliance will comprise ten member countries, reflecting a growing influence on the international stage.
The inclusion of these diverse nations underscores BRICS’ appeal, as more than 40 countries had expressed interest in joining the group, with 22 formally submitting requests.
