Ethiopia Expresses Inability to Attend IGAD Meeting in Kampala Aimed to discuss its deal with Somaliland

With just one day remaining until the scheduled leaders’ meeting of IGAD countries in Uganda, the Ethiopian government issues an apology for its non-participation, citing short notice and scheduling conflicts.

In a formal letter to IGAD, Ethiopia reiterates its unwavering commitment to addressing the matter on alternative dates, adhering to the established rules of procedure for IGAD meetings. However, the potential postponement of the meeting remains uncertain, given Sudan’s recent suspension of cooperation with the bloc.

The meeting, announced by Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, aimed to delve into the recent agreements between the leaders of Somaliland and Ethiopia, allowing Ethiopia access to the sea and formally recognizing Somaliland.

Since the public disclosure of the memorandum of understanding between Hargeisa and Addis Ababa, Somalia has accused Ethiopia of violating its territorial integrity, urging the international community to invalidate the agreement.
