Kismayu (CBATV) – Over 20 al-Shabaab militants were killed and several others wounded when security forces conducted an operation in southern Somalia, an official and local media reported on Monday.
The operation was carried out near the vicinity of Abdalla Birole, located
some 55 kilometers (34 miles) from the port city of Kismayo, the administrative
capital of Jubaland state.
According to a press release from the Jubbaland state media, the local government forces launched operations in the villages in an effort to stop Al Shabaab.
The operation reportedly resulted in the killing of 20 Al-Shabaab fighters
and wounding others in Jubbaland.
The commander of the 1st battalion of the Jubbaland Khiyaar Abdi Mohamed said they killed key al-Shabaab members. The two named Tasmir and Adani were the head of the landmine and had caused a devastating security impact of the lives and businesses of people in Jubbaland.
The forces of the southern state of Somalia have been in pursuit of the militant group which in July carried out an attack on a hotel in the administrative capital of the region Kismayu killing 28 people.
The Jubbaland forces are now in control of villages under the administration of Abdalla Biroole district.
Militant group Al-Shabaab which has been fighting the federal government of Somalia and other Somali states has not yet commented on Jubbaland’s claim that it killed its members.
