Algeria Proposes Resolution for Humanitarian Ceasefire in Israel-Hamas Conflict

Algeria has presented a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council, urging an immediate humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The United States, however, opposes this proposal, asserting that it would primarily benefit the Palestinians.

The draft resolution, unveiled on Thursday, condemns the forced displacement of the Palestinian civilian population and reiterates the call for all parties involved to adhere to international law.

It emphasizes the necessity for full, rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access into and throughout the entire Gaza Strip.

According to reports, Algeria had shared the draft with the 15-member council following a meeting discussing the recent ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that Israel take action to prevent acts of genocide but refrained from calling for an immediate ceasefire.

The possibility of Algeria’s draft resolution to be put to a vote remains uncertain. as for the resolution to be adopted, it requires at least nine votes in favor and must avoid vetoes from the United States, Britain, France, China, or Russia.
