Ahlu Sunna commander in Guriel joins government forces

Reports from Galgadud region indicates that the commander of Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a in Guriel town has defected to the Somali federal government forces.

Ahlu Sunna’s commander, Abdul Dahir Roble Adde said that after a long meeting and thorough discussion with the 15th Battalion commander Gen Masudud Mohamed Warsame, they agreed to join the government forces and will be part of the federal government of Somalia.

The meeting between the 15th Battalion commander of the 21st Division forces and Commander Abdul Dahir Roble was also attended by Mohamed Ahmed Antobo, the former governor of the Hodan district of Banadir region.

The commander of the Ahlu Sunna Waljama in charge of Guri El town arrived in Dhusamareb last night the capital of Galmudug state where he was received by government officials.

So far, there have been no reports from Ahlu Sunna leadership about the actions of the commander Abdullahi Dahir Rooble Adde.

Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a is a Somalia-based paramilitary group consisting of moderate Sufis opposed to radical Islamist groups such as Al-Shabaab.

They are fighting to prevent strict Sharia and Wahhabism from being imposed, and protecting the local Sunni-Sufi traditions and generally moderate religious views.

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) early this year launched an exercise to incorporate forces of the Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’a (ASWJ) group into the Somali Security Forces.

Hassan Ali Khaire, the Prime Minister of Somalia, officiated at the launch of the exercise in Dhusamareb, the capital of the Galmudug State of Somalia.

The ASWJ militias we’re expected to be integrated into the security agencies that include the army, police, intelligence service, and custodial corps within a year.

The integration, which involves capturing an individuals’ biometrics, supports efforts to build active Somali Security Forces.

The ASWJ forces based in Dhusamareb is responsible for kicking the extremist group Al-Shabaab from most parts of the region.

In December 2017, ASWJ signed a power-sharing agreement with the state administration.
