At least 100,000 children have been affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco last Friday, the UN Children’s Agency (UNICEF) said Monday.

‘While UNICEF doesn’t yet know the exact number of children killed and injured, the latest estimates from 2022 indicate that children represent almost a third of the population in Morocco,” the agency announced in a statement.

According to UN estimates, the 6.8 magnitude earthquake affected more than 300,000 people in Marrakech and the High Atlas Mountains.

Morocco’s Interior Ministry also said over 2,800 people have been killed, including children, with thousands more injured.

Authorities are concerned that these figures will only rise.

The catastrophic earthquake caused extensive damage in Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

For the third day after the deadly earthquake, rescue teams continued to hunt for missing victims buried beneath the wreckage on Monday.

Several international rescue teams have already arrived in the country to assist in the search for survivors.

Morocco has so far accepted aid from Spain, the United Kingdom, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

The tremor was the strongest to strike the North African country in several years, according to Morocco’s National Geophysical Institute.
