An American official said Wednesday that the US intends to restart security and development cooperation with Niger as long as the military leadership makes efforts to restore democracy.

Molly Phee, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, briefed journalists in Niamey after meeting with military commanders who deposed an elected president in July.

She explained that the United States has no problem with Niger’s ruling military council otherwise known as the CNSP, so far they remain a good partner with Washington.

At the meeting, she confirmed the intent of the United States to resume security and development cooperation in phases, reciprocally as the CNSP takes actions, especially towards restoration of democracy.

The need to revitalise the ties between the US and Niger follows the recent memorandum of understanding signed between Russia and the West African country to strengthen cooperation in the field of defense.

Russia has been enjoying good relationships with some African countries, especially those under military regime.

Despite this, theenvoy said she was convinced that the United States would remain Niger’s best partners.

The US and Western countries have sanctioned Niger by cutting off aid to the country after the military removed President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 and detained him from leaving the country.
