EU Voices Deep Concern Over Ongoing Conflict in Amhara Region of Ethiopia

In a statement, EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, expressed deep concerns about the continuing hostilities, alleged human rights violations, and the distressing reports of numerous civilian casualties within the Amhara region. The European Union on Sunday conveyed its grave apprehension regarding the protracted conflict and the rising toll of civilian casualties in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia.

The statement issued by Josep Borrell on behalf of the European Union underscores the troubling occurrences in the region, where a surge in detentions has been observed, particularly following the declaration of a State of Emergency.

The EU aligns itself with the African Union, the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, and the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission in their shared call for the safeguarding of civilian lives, an immediate cessation of hostilities, and the initiation of dialogue between the conflicting parties.

Furthermore, the European Union has affirmed its willingness to offer support for any initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue, reconciliation, and a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Josep Borrell emphasized, “We urge all Ethiopians to embrace the path of dialogue, especially within the ongoing National Dialogue process, which provides a concrete and enduring framework for shaping a peaceful future for the country.”
