As the world watches today on Somaliland’s elections where the general public have started casting their votes. CBA highlights major differences between this election compared to the last years…………
It is the first time in history that 1,65,847 people have formally registered to cast their votes, which is taking place today across the country. When you look at the queue most are female and youths and more hopeful to elect those who will shape the country’s future.
This election will be the first combined election Somaliland voters have experienced. The local council and house of representatives were used to hold separately but this year in this election they are all combined after the election was delayed several times.
Sool region which is the eastren part of Somaliland has also set a new record. Residents have experienced their largest number of eligible voters in history. These are regions where the next speaker house of representatives is expected to be elected from.
Female candidates seem to be in strong competition with their opposite gender. 28 female candidates are contesting in this election after the parliament dropped the women and minority seats quota which was introduced by the President last year. Some of them are front runners who are more hopeful to be elected and defeat male gender candidates.
Five of the candidates are from marginalised communities. This is Barkhad Jama Batun, a front runner for the house of representatives. His election victory will set a new record of being the first candidate from the marginalised communities to be elected after 60 years.
