UN condemns Mogadishu attack, wants perpetrators prosecuted

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has condemned the recent deadly terrorist attack that took place in Mogadishu.

At least 20 people were killed and 30 others wounded after a car bomb ripped through a popular restaurant in Somalia’s capital of Mogadishu late Friday night.

He extends his profound condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a swift recovery to those injured. He calls for the perpetrators of the attack to be brought to justice as soon as possible.

The Secretary General reiterates the full supports of the United Nations with the government and the people of Somalia in the face of such crime.

He went on to say that indiscriminate violence and attacks will not deter the good people of Somalia in their pursuit of peace, stability and prosperity.

The deadly attack comes amid an already tense security situation in Mogadishu over political uncertainty in the capital.

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s term expired on Feb. 8, though no elections have been held to determine his replacement.
